What is your Website for?

Below is an email conversation with a friend who asked me to look at a site he had just had built on the cheap. Initial opinion was good, but looking into it closer an email started to develop that might prove useful to others….
Not to get too deeply into it, in terms of SEO and marketing it generally depends what the site is intended for and who it is aimed at.
As it stands yours is a very good looking “brochure site” but with little actual written content for the Search Engines to understand how to categorise it (the blue block at the bottom is a graphic and therefore unreadable to search engines).
It uses Dreamweaver templates and what are called Transitional doc types which are very old. We have not built sites like that for many years and it would be hard to do any onsite SEO (as averse to offsite SEO, link building, directories etc) especially as you are lacking a lot of written relevant content which is the holy grail of SEO. As is changing content, keeping it fresh. The more you change the more the search engines will revisit.
In terms of focus and site intention there are a couple of alternatives to think about.
For example our retail clients want to be ranked high for generic products such as:
“Leather Sofas”, “Sofas in Leeds” etc.
and they need thousands of hits per day to make good sales
We on the other hand are a little more specific with:
“Web Design Leeds”, “Web Designers Leeds” etc
We can get away with just thousands of hits per month to get website sales, could not handle thousands per day.
You on the other hand may find that your clients are more from word of mouth and meetings and that search ranking is not that important ie:
“kids comics creators”
Unless you have other services to offer like “logo design” or “copy writing”
I suppose you have to decide where you want to make your money. For example we have a wide format poster machine that sits idle most of the time, but we are not going to start promoting it as we do not want to end up being a poster company.
This is just a simple overview to give you a bit of an idea of what we look at and it might help when talking to you SEO company.
Obviously we tend to work closely with each individual client as everyone is different and we work holistically over all aspects of marketing and SEO.
